So, did you ever find the final strip of paper (with the cut bottom edge) or was that attached to the pair of pants in question?

I think I ended up with those gingham napkins. When my kids ask me to repair those jeans, I slap whatever fabric I have in the scrap pile on and stitch it down. So far the oldest has a flannel hippo face peaking out from behind a rear pocket and a few red areas on the other side. The youngest has green, orange, and blue bits poking out of her jeans in various areas. They don't ask any more, heh heh. On the other hand, a few from the high school are showing up wanting the same thing on their jeans. What did I do!?

The boy is developmentally disabled. He also has autism. I'm a little nervous with him on the machine but I think you make a good point, it's something he could probably learn. Also, the particular repair needed was pretty complex; it needed a patch by the pocket (there's a rivet right there) as the fabric was completely worn away, only the topstitching of the pocket and the pocket bagging was keeping it together.

Well Kathleen, I don't get "fix my pants" notes...he's been trained well enough to know better...but if you walk around my house there are all kinds of love notes written in the dust!!

I'd rather sew than clean/alter/mend!

The comments above remind me of the lady who made her husband swimming trunks with wash away basting thread...he hit the water, guess what?LOL Always wondered if that was true, or just another sewing urban legend!:))

Kathleen..the question that really springs to mind...why doesn't "the boy" know how to fix his own pants?

My best friend gave me her sister's skirt to mend and I had it for a year and they kept asking me about it. I had to admit that I "lost it" somewhere in my house. I even caught my friend looking for it herself! (She couldn't)
It's not like I wouldn't be compensated either, she had a vintage pair of tails in trade but wouldn't give it to me until I finished the skirt.
And: I have this fabulous wardrobe- in my head.

That's hilarious!

Over the last 8 years, my DH has brought me two pairs of sleeping shorts and three pairs of his khaki shorts for repair.

Each time, I cut them apart, use the pieces I like, and he has four new pairs of shorts he bought because he couldn't remember what happened to the other ones.

Time does heal all tears.

LOL!!!

This is just great!

My dad asked me if I was able to fix his pants if the zipper broke...

I am telling you, he was laying the bricks to the future mending road right there... *laughs*
