Thank you so much for this article! I own a vintage pattern business and want to offer multi-sized patterns. I contacted a company earlier this year about grading a 13 piece vintage pattern into 4 sizes, and was quoted $1,400. I'm sure you can guess which company it was. My jaw hit the floor, because I have read The Entrepreneur's Guide to Sewn Product Manufacturing expected the cost to be much, much lower. I'm glad to find out that it should be, and I will contact some of the companies you mentioned for additional quotes.

This information is really going to move my business forward. Thank you!

I have no design skills but am looking to add my creative flair with the help of a designer to create sports bras and athletic apparel for women. Before I get to the stage of contracting with a grader and pattern maker, what should I do first? Should a designer have the skills to make a pattern as well? How much should I be willing to pay to hire a designer to work with me on this business idea? What is an acceptable payment for a designer?

Hi Miranda, these comments are getting a little off topic and shouldn't go here but you (or anyone) can always write me directly (see the link under admin). You can run your idea by me. I'm not expensive ($100 an hour) so call me up. And no, the book isn't available at borders. They still owe me money so I don't sell to them. You can get it via Amazon, my office or paypal.

You have no idea how much that helped me. I am starting a fashion company in Kansas City. KC used to be really big in Fashion back in the Nelly Donn days. I know it is ambitious, but I am confident that I can do this from Kansas City. I wish I had someone like you to run my entire idea by to see what you think. I am tossing around the idea of starting out by wholeselling to boutiques or chain-stores and wondering whether or not custom-made apparel(mostly tailored for the custom apparel) is a good way to boost the popularity of my brand. My aesthetic is an eclectic mix of conservatism and eccentricism...it's very clean & fun, but just a little off beat. Any advice? Also, is your book available at Borders?

I wanted to find out some basics about hiring Fashion Designers. What is normal, as far as compensation; wages or part ownership in the company or is there a template for how they receive credit for working on a design team

Are you asking because you want to know what you should be charging or what you should be paying? First, in real life, designers don't make much (see what designers earn). If you're hiring a freelancer, they are paid by the sketch (there's a whole chapter on freelancing in my book; find it in the upper left sidebar). If you need somebody to clean up some concepts and ideas you already have, perhaps a freelance illustrator is all you'd need. In real life -not TV land- designers are only employees like everyone else who works for you, unless they started the company -which is what this site is all about- but otherwise, for heaven's sake, no, you wouldn't give them part ownership of the company! I mean, that's like giving an architect part ownership of your house or your building just because they designed it. You pay their wages or fees and whatever they come up with is yours. You paid for it, you own it. And the only time they get "credit" is if they are already established, a prestigious household name or at least well-known in a given niche or field. In that case, you'd be talking to their attorneys or whoever handles their licensing deals so you wouldn't be here at all.
