I found an article interviewing a buyer (pdf) which you may find interesting. Although it’s from a sorority newsletter (those are often known for puff pieces) I think it’s worth a look. Margaret Hinojosa is a Couture/European Designer Sportswear Buyer for Nordstrom’s. She discusses her daily work and how she got into the business.
Margaret Hinojosa…has daily encounters with names that could make most women swoon-Versace. Chanel. Dolce & Gabbana. Valentino. She travels to New York, Paris and Milan. She attends fashion shows that resemble rock concerts in their star power and intensity. She has private meetings to preview clothing from some of the worlds’ most desired designers. But it isn’t all fun and games. Margaret spoke candidly with the Quarterly about living the life of a high fashion buyer.

There used to be more content to this post but it went *poof* as did some of the comments. In any event, the ongoing drama of this post is that the article keeps disappearing. I’ve archived and loaded a copy of it on my server -thanks to Conor who slogged through the waybackmachine archives to find it.
What is reasonable to pay for a pattern? I know it varies, depending on the garmet but what would be an average price?

I’d think this comment is OT for this topic. May I recommend buying my book? It has all the information you’d need there. It’s over in the left side bar. The book has 24 five-star reviews on Amazon (all reviews are five stars) so it’s not just me

I tried to follow your link to the interview with Margaret Hinojosa but when I got to the sorority web site it said it had been moved or didn’t exist any more. I couldn’t find the interview and it sounded interesting.

Hmm. I searched my hard drive to no avail. The waybackmachine has it (I went to Jan 2005) tho but it will be labor intensive to find it. I successfully downloaded a pdf from the sorority’s old newsletter page. Maybe you can find it and leave the link?

I’d think this comment is OT for this topic. May I recommend buying my book? It has all the information you’d need there. It’s over in the left side bar. The book has 24 five-star reviews on Amazon (all reviews are five stars) so it’s not just me
