Zippered welt pocket tutorial

Ooops. I just realized I never got around to posting the zippered welt pocket tutorial I mentioned last week. Below is a photo of what the pocket looks like.

When someone first asked me about a welt zipper pocket, I thought they meant a regular welt pocket with a zipper stuck behind it which is no big deal once you do the regular welt pocket. Like I said before, I have my own prejudices. In better outerwear, you wouldn’t intentionally design a zipped pocket like this, especially in leather goods (my specialty) because it’s perceived as kind of tacky. However, I do concede it has its uses in sportswear or even as a design effect with contrasting teeth.
Truth be told, before I did this exercise, I’d done only one of these pockets in my life. I had a client (Jeremy, pg. 74 in the book) who wanted to know how to do these for a back pocket on running tights so I just sat down and did it for him according to what seemed most logical and it came out just fine. Nobody ever showed me so I don’t know that it’s “right” but judging from results, it can’t be wrong either. An aside about Jeremy. He left town and moved to CO, owing me some money. Not much, about $50 but I could have used it at the time. I just wrote it off. He was entertaining, I didn’t have any bad feelings towards him (really) but always wondered what became of him. Anyway, two years later, I got a check in the mail for the money he owed me. Now that’s class. Never heard from him again but I’d be happy to talk to him if he ever popped up again. As long as he got a fit model. Heh.
Anyway, F-I members can click through for the tutorial; it’s been posted to the forum as a premium for Fashion-Incubator site supporters. I also posted an additional zipper tutorial for a really neat application useful for handbag designers.

This may or may not be random… we are talking about zippers… What is a zipper jig used for exactly or I guess how is it used? I was just looking at the zipper jig in the Southstar Supply catalog and it baffles me. Would this be used specifically for inserting pants zippers?
Here’s the link to the jig at the SS website:

I’m not a member, but this intrigues me. Is there some trick? This seems too obvious to be premium content. Is there an obvious way and then a much better “deluxe” way to do this?

I don’t think there’s a trick to it and I’d agree it’s obvious. I mean, I’ve done exactly three in my whole life -two in the process of writing the tutorial. I also wouldn’t think it would merit being premium content but I suppose it is if people are willing to pay $50 for an online class to learn it.
